The office was a place in which designers did not get actively involved some years ago. However, in the past few years a marked tendency has shown that the workplace is now another area that should always look harmonious and with style. Moreover, it has recently become standard that offices look as much as a house as possible. That is, though of course there are specific items that we’re not going to see in a house and we’ll spot in an office, offices have borrowed furniture from the house. However, we must also consider that office furniture has to bear in mind an indispensable characteristic: it has to be comfortable furniture. Differently from the household, office furniture, for example chairs, needs to be extremely comfortable due to the fact that people spend much of their time sitting down working. Therefore, furniture designers here have a double challenge: make stylish furniture that is comfortable enough to spend many hours using it without getting backaches or any other kind of pain.
Generally black or white, modern office furniture has gained ground against the traditional style for offices. Wood veneer seems to be the most popular material to build desks and leather and metal are the most preferred for office chairs. However, there is also a growing tendency to build office furniture using bright colors such as chrome green or pink. The key change in this style is that office furniture has changed to resemble house furniture. Nevertheless, there are some characteristics in office chairs, such as having adjustable lifts and rolling bases that have not been removed.
As stated before, office furniture has evolved and has borrowed many characteristics from house furniture. Nevertheless, it stills conserves basic concepts that cannot be removed because they must fulfill specific functions in offices. Luckily, furniture design has made its way through office furniture to give style to an area that had been somber and grey for many years and that it has now been given a different perspective. After all, we spend many hours at work. Why not having comfort and style there, as well as we have in our houses?
